The Basics of Dominoes
Dominoes are a type of game that was invented in Europe. Traditionally, dominoes are made from ivory or bone. They are also made from mother of pearl oyster shell. However, they can be found in almost any color combination.
Dominoes are similar to playing cards in that a player needs to lay them on a flat surface. They are also marked with an arrangement of pips. The pips are drilled and painted. These pips can be added or removed to the dominoes to change the value.
The game typically involves a single player or two players. The first player draws one tile and places it face down in the center of the table. This tile is usually the double-six. Depending on the type of domino, the tile may be double-blank or may have a number on both ends.
In order to play the game, players must decide on a target score. Once a target has been determined, players take turns laying tiles onto the platform. Typically, a winning score is reached when a player’s hand contains the least number of spots. If a player loses, the opposing player is awarded pips on that player’s tiles. Some variants require that both players chip out a piece.
The most common domino set consists of 28 tiles. Players can also purchase larger sets. These sets generally contain a double-nine, a double-twelve, and a double-six. A double-nine has 55 tiles, while a double-twelve has 91 tiles. Unlike the other sets, a double-six has nine tiles at the start.
When the game begins, a player takes turns adding dominoes to the platform. One player may choose to place a tile on each of the four sides of the board. Others may only choose to place a tile on the edge of the board. Regardless of the method used, the goal of the game is to make the tower as stable as possible.
After the first player has placed a tile on the platform, the second player must match the number on the other end of the domino to a part of the first player’s tile. For example, if a player chose to place a 6-4, the next player must match a 4-6 to a part of the 6-4.
During the course of the game, the dominoes can tip over. Hence, it is important to use a sturdy table to hold the dominoes in place. Likewise, the dominoes can be stacked on the ends of the chain.
The most common type of domino game is a scoring game. The number of spots on each side of the dominoes represents its value. The highest-value piece has six pips on each end. Alternatively, the value of a domino can be based on its weight.
